India’s First Hydrogen Fuel Train Cleared for Operations on Jind–Sonipat Route

May 27: India has cleared its first hydrogen-powered train for commercial operations on the Jind–Sonipat section, marking a significant step in the country’s shift toward cleaner and greener railway technology.

The hydrogen fuel-based train is designed to reduce carbon emissions by using hydrogen as a fuel source instead of conventional diesel, supporting India’s broader decarbonisation goals in the transport sector.

Officials said the introduction of the train is part of ongoing efforts to modernise railway infrastructure and adopt alternative energy solutions that improve sustainability and reduce environmental impact.

The Jind–Sonipat route has been selected for initial operations, where the train will undergo real-world performance testing under operational conditions before wider deployment.

Experts view the development as an important milestone in India’s transition toward low-emission mobility, with potential for expansion across other suitable railway corridors in the future.
