“World Sickle Cell Day is observed worldwide each year to raise awareness about sickle cell disease (SCD) blood disorder that significantly affects blood cells. Unlike blood cells, which are typically round and flexible, those affected by SCD can have difficulty moving through blood vessels. They struggle to deliver oxygen to various parts of the body.

With the theme “Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally” millions of people worldwide are afflicted with sickle cell disease (SCD), a genetic illness that is most common among those of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian origin. This day seeks to educate people on the ailment itself, its symptoms, potential complications and benefits of genetic testing and counselling. It is crucial for individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) to keep getting regular medical care because any sign or complication requires immediate help.

The World Sickle Cell Day is a day that reminds us of the challenges people with sickle cell disease face daily and the efforts required to address them. On this day, let us celebrate the courage, resolve and toughness of the entire community living with sickle cell anaemia and pledge ourselves again to search for new breakthroughs in sickle cell research, treatment, and support. A world wherein those who have Sickle Cell Disease will not have their general health, joy or chances hampered anymore can be created by us as one team.”
