Wellington, May 11: New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has postponed the proposed launch of its NZ20 franchise-based league to the 2027–28 season, following ongoing reviews of scheduling requirements and long-term operational planning.
The decision was made to ensure the tournament is properly integrated into the domestic and international cricket calendar, avoiding fixture congestion and allowing sufficient preparation time.
NZC stated that the additional lead time will be used to finalise key aspects of the competition, including franchise structure, player participation models, commercial arrangements, and overall tournament framework.
The governing body emphasised that the NZ20 league remains a key part of its long-term vision to enhance domestic cricket and create more competitive opportunities for players in New Zealand and abroad.
Officials are expected to provide further details on the league’s structure and roadmap closer to the revised launch period.
