Zomato’s World Environment Day film shines a spotlight on a choice millions of customers don’t realize is already with them

India, June 05: This World Environment Day, Zomato, India’s food ordering and delivery platform, has launched a new campaign that brings attention to a simple choice customers can make while ordering food online: opting for restaurants that use low plastic packaging.

The film follows a series of playful moments between dogs and their parents. As the dogs excitedly chase and play with everyday plastic objects, such as bottles, containers and polythene bags, pet parents scramble to take them away worried about the harm they could cause. When offered toys made with natural materials instead, the dogs happily switch. Through humor and everyday pet behavior, the film highlights that making a different choice begins with knowing that one exists.

The campaign uses this insight to draw a parallel with food ordering. While customers routinely look for restaurants based on cuisine, ratings and delivery time, packaging rarely enters the decision-making process. This is not because people do not care, but because many do not know they have a choice.

Customers can discover participating restaurants by searching ‘low plastic packaging’ on the Zomato app or by applying the filter under Trust Markers. They can also spot the ‘low plastic packaging’ tag on top of the participating restaurants’ menu pages and a clear call out in the order summary on the post-order page.

The feature builds on Zomato’s Plastic-Free Future Program, which recognizes restaurant partners that have actively adopted alternatives to plastic packaging like bagasse, molded fibre and areca leaf containers, paper with seaweed or aqueous coatings, cornstarch-based compostable packaging, aluminium, glass and earthen pots, to pack their main menu items.

Launched in December 2024, the Program includes more than 10,000 restaurants across 350+ brands in over 500 cities. These restaurants have collectively delivered more than 100 million orders.

The Program continues to expand as more restaurants make the switch away from plastic packaging.

Commenting on the campaign, Anjalli Ravi Kumar, Chief Sustainability Officer, Eternal, said,

“At Zomato, we have always believed in expanding choice for our customers. Whether it is cuisine preferences, dietary needs or restaurant choices, our role is to make information visible so people can make decisions that work for them. The ‘Low plastic packaging’ feature follows the same philosophy. Many customers already care about packaging and its impact, but they often do not know how to act on that concern while ordering food. This feature makes that choice visible and accessible.”

Additionally, Zomato has been at the forefront of spotlighting entrepreneurs working on innovative plastic-free packaging for food delivery through the Zomato Plastic-Free Future Packathon, organised in collaboration with Startup India, DPIIT.
