Guwahati, August 18, 2026: Assam is set to expand its decentralised administrative framework with the creation of eight additional co-districts, taking the number of operational co-districts to 47, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday. The move is aimed at bringing government administration closer to citizens and improving access to public services, particularly in rural and remote areas.
The Chief Minister said the expansion is part of Assam’s broader effort to make governance more accessible and reduce the administrative burden on people. Under the co-district model, several government functions and services are made available closer to local communities, reducing the need for residents to travel to district headquarters for routine administrative requirements.
The initiative is expected to be particularly useful in areas where difficult terrain, long distances and connectivity challenges can make access to government offices difficult. By decentralising administrative services, the state government expects to improve service delivery, speed up coordination among departments and strengthen the implementation of welfare and development programmes at the grassroots level.
Sarma said the addition of the eight co-districts would further strengthen Assam’s “Ease of Governance” efforts. The government is expected to announce the locations and administrative jurisdictions of the new units as part of the expansion. The move is being positioned as an important administrative reform aimed at making government services more citizen-centric and accessible across the state.
