May 20: The Central government is preparing a major push to strengthen inland water transport in the northeastern region, with plans to invest nearly ₹4,800 crore over the next five years to improve connectivity and trade infrastructure.

The proposed investment aims to modernise waterways, develop river transport facilities, and improve cargo and passenger movement across the Northeast. Officials believe the initiative will help unlock economic opportunities in the region while offering a more efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transportation.

The project is expected to focus on upgrading navigation channels, building terminals and jetties, introducing modern vessels, and improving last-mile connectivity along key river routes. Authorities are also looking at enhancing cross-border trade links with neighbouring countries through water-based transport networks.

Government officials said inland waterways can play a crucial role in reducing logistics costs and easing pressure on road transport in the region, where difficult terrain often creates connectivity challenges.

The Northeast, with its extensive river systems, is considered to have strong potential for water transport-led development. Experts believe improved waterways could support local businesses, tourism, agriculture, and regional trade while generating employment opportunities.

The investment plan is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen infrastructure and improve multi-modal connectivity in the Northeast, which has become a major focus area for development in recent years.
