Rajasthan, May 13: Rajasthan is facing a severe spell of heatwave conditions, with Barmer recording a blistering 48.3°C—one of the highest temperatures reported in the region this season. The intense heat has pushed daily life to a standstill in several western districts, where residents are struggling under prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for severe heatwave conditions in three districts for the day, cautioning that the situation could turn hazardous during peak afternoon hours. Authorities have warned that continued exposure to such high temperatures may lead to heat exhaustion, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses.
Local administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert, with advisories urging people to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement, especially between late morning and early evening. Schools, transport workers, and labour-intensive sectors have been advised to take extra precautions as heat stress conditions intensify.
The persistent heat is being driven by dry north-westerly winds, clear skies, and strong solar radiation, all of which are contributing to rapid surface heating across the region. Weather officials expect the heatwave to persist, with only limited respite likely in the immediate forecast.
Health experts have reiterated the importance of staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and minimizing exposure to direct sunlight. Authorities have also emphasized special care for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.
With temperatures hovering at dangerous levels, Rajasthan continues to remain in the grip of one of its harshest early-summer heat spells, prompting urgent safety measures across affected districts.
