Bhitarkanika National Park to Remain Closed from May 1 to July 31 for Crocodile Breeding Season

Bhubaneswar, April 16(BNP): Bhitarkanika National Park, widely known as the ‘home of giant saltwater crocodiles’, will remain closed to tourists from May 1 to July 31 in view of the annual crocodile breeding and nesting season.

According to official sources, the closure order has been issued by the Rajnagar Forest Division to ensure a disturbance-free environment during this sensitive period.

Every year, crocodiles in the rivers, creeks, and other water bodies of Bhitarkanika begin nesting and laying eggs during these months. After laying eggs, female crocodiles turn highly protective and aggressive, guarding their nests for several weeks.

To safeguard the reptiles and their nesting habitats, the forest authorities have imposed a complete ban on tourist activities inside the park during this three-month period.

Officials stated that the decision is aimed at preventing any disturbance to the mating and nesting process of the crocodiles, ensuring their safety and successful breeding.

Tourists have been strictly advised to avoid visiting the park during this period and cooperate with the restrictions.

Bhitarkanika National Park, a major wildlife destination in Odisha, attracts thousands of visitors each year, especially during the winter season, for crocodile sightings and exploration of its rich mangrove ecosystem.

The park is expected to reopen for tourists after the breeding season concludes.
