"MGM Cancer Institute Celebrates the Success of 4th 'Walk in Pink @ Namma Chennai'"Chennai, 21 October 2024: MGM Cancer Institute, a leading destination for advanced cancer care, is delighted to announce the overwhelming success of its fourth edition of the “Walk in Pink @ Namma Chennai” Walkathon. This remarkable event has become a significant milestone in the ongoing battle against breast cancer, raising awareness and promoting early detection. The Walk in Pink event united cancer champions, doctors, students, and employees of MGM Healthcare, along with the community, in a collective show of support for breast cancer awareness. The spirit of solidarity and commitment displayed by all participants reinforces the importance of education, advocacy, and early intervention in the battle against breast cancer.

The “Walk in Pink @ Namma Chennai” walkathon was flagged off by Mr. S.M.Nasar, Minister for Minorities & Non-resident Tamils Welfare, Mr. M.K. Mohan, Member of Legislative Assembly, Anna Nagar, in the presence of Dr. M.A. Raja, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, Director, Oncology Services, MGM Cancer Institute; Dr. Veda Padma Priya, Senior Consultant, Breast Oncology, Clinic B, MGM Cancer Institute; and Dr. Kirti Katherine Kabeer, Consultant, Breast Oncology, Clinic B, MGM Cancer Institute. The walkathon started from MGM Cancer Institute on Nelson Manickam Road and culminated at Anna Nagar Tower Park with an overwhelming response of over 500 participants.

According to a study published by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the burden of breast cancer among Indian women in 2016 was estimated to be 515.4 DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years) per 1,00,000 women after age standardization. The burden metrics at the state level exhibited substantial heterogeneity. Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, and Delhi had a higher burden of breast cancer than states in the eastern and north- eastern regions. The projection for 2025 indicates a substantial increase, reaching 5.6 million DALYs.

The increasing incidence of breast cancer in India underscores the urgent need for comprehensive awareness campaigns and screening programs. A significant concern is that a majority of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the country present with advanced stages or metastatic disease, suggesting a lack of awareness. India faces remarkably low rates of breast cancer screening, encompassing self-breast examination and mammography.

The primary objective of organizing “Walk in Pink @ Namma Chennai” every year is to raise awareness about the risk factors associated with breast cancer and to empower women to take charge of their breast health through regular self-examinations and screenings. The event aimed to foster a sense of communal responsibility and dispel misconceptions surrounding breast cancer.

Dr. M.A. Raja, Senior Consultant-Medical Oncology & Director-Oncology Services, MGM Cancer Institute, expressed, “Early detection is a crucial step in saving countless lives, and “Walk in Pink @ Namma Chennai” stands as a vital stride in breast cancer prevention. By breaking the silence and challenging the stigma surrounding cancer, the event aimed to empower women to openly discuss their health and embrace annual mammography screenings.”

Dr. Veda Padma Priya, Senior Consultant, Breast Oncology, MGM Cancer Institute, shared her thoughts on the walkathon. “Breast cancer is not just a medical condition but a challenge we can face together; early detection saves lives, and awareness is the first step. During this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s walk for a future where every woman knows the importance of self-examinations, regular screenings, and prompt action. The rise in breast cancer cases in Chennai is alarming, especially among younger women. It’s crucial for women to prioritize regular screenings and adopt healthier habits.”

Dr Kirti Katherine Kabeer, Consultant, Breast Oncologist & Oncoplastic Surgeon, MGM Cancer Institute, said, “we encourage women to stay physically active, not only for their overall health but because regular exercise plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of breast cancer. Physical activity helps regulate hormones, boosts the immune system, and improves mental well-being—all factors that can contribute to a healthier life. Events like ‘Walk in Pink @ Namma Chennai’ serve as a reminder that taking small, active steps every day can make a big difference in preventing breast cancer and promoting long-term wellness.”

Around 500 participants, including cancer survivors, students from various city colleges, doctors, healthcare professionals, and dedicated volunteers, were part of this walkathon. Towards the end of the walking trail, a special Zumba session and a mime act were performed, highlighting the importance of physical and mental fitness, which was enjoyed by cancer survivors and volunteers.

MGM Cancer Institute extends its heartfelt gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and supporters for making “Walk in Pink @ Namma Chennai” a resounding success. We look forward to continuing our mission to raise breast cancer awareness and provide unwavering support to those affected by this disease.
