Kolkata, 24 March 2025: In celebration of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) 2025, Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC) in collaboration with Calcutta Ladies Circle and Manovikas Kendra, is hosting a 5-day clay modelling workshop designed to foster inclusivity, creativity, and self-expression for individuals with Down syndrome.
The workshop will take place on March 20 & 21, and April 21, 22 & 23, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Manovikas Kendra. Open to anyone above 12 years, this initiative highlights the therapeutic benefits of clay modelling, inspired by the artistic legacy of Rabindranath Tagore. By encouraging non-verbal communication and sensory engagement, the workshop aims to create an inclusive and empowering space for individuals with Down syndrome.
Observed annually on 21 March, World Down Syndrome Day serves as a global movement advocating for the rights, dignity, and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. The 2025 theme, “Improve Our Support Systems,” emphasizes the need for accessible support structures – ensuring that individuals with Down syndrome and their families receive the resources and encouragement they deserve. This workshop falls under the DEAI (diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusivity) initiatives at KCC which focus exclusively on the development of marginalised people and individuals with disabilities, empowering them through self-expression and creativity. Through exhibitions, talks, art workshops, film screenings, performances, and special sensory corners, we are consistently striving to ensure that KCC is an all-inclusive space.
Richa Agarwal, Chairperson, KCC, says “KCC is honored to collaborate with Calcutta Ladies Circle and Manovikas Kendra to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day through the power of creativity. This workshop aligns perfectly with the WDSD 2025 theme – that is improving the support systems for people with Down syndrome. Clay modelling here becomes a therapeutic tool that nurtures confidence, motor skills, and creativity. By creating together, we build a world that values and supports every individual, regardless of ability. At KCC, we believe that art transcends barriers, providing a space where everyone’s voice matters. Through this initiative, we reaffirm our commitment to making creativity accessible to all. It is an absolute delight to watch children and individuals with Down syndrome gain confidence in their ways of expressing themselves through art and hands-on interaction with facilitating artists.”
