New Delhi, May 15: India has reiterated its commitment to strengthening credibility, transparency, and compliance standards in the natural diamond industry, aiming to reinforce the country’s position as a trusted global hub for diamond processing and trade.

The government has underscored the importance of maintaining ethical sourcing practices and improving oversight across the diamond value chain — from sourcing and cutting to polishing and export. The objective is to ensure greater accountability and long-term sustainability in the sector.

Officials noted that enhanced compliance mechanisms are crucial for safeguarding India’s reputation in global markets, where demand for traceable and responsibly sourced diamonds continues to rise. India remains one of the world’s leading centres for diamond cutting and polishing, with Surat serving as a major industry hub.

The renewed focus aligns with international expectations on transparency, particularly as global buyers increasingly prioritise verified supply chains and responsible production practices.

Industry participants are expected to collaborate with regulatory bodies to adopt stronger verification systems, digital tracking solutions, and improved reporting frameworks to ensure better traceability and compliance.

The initiative reflects India’s broader effort to strengthen its standing in the global gems and jewellery sector while promoting ethical trade practices and sustained industry growth.
