May 27: India’s government health expenditure increased to 1.43 per cent of GDP in the financial year 2022–23, reflecting continued efforts to strengthen the country’s public healthcare system, according to official data released by the Health Ministry.

The rise in spending highlights the government’s focus on expanding healthcare infrastructure, improving medical services, and enhancing access to affordable treatment across urban and rural areas.

Officials said the increase has supported investments in primary healthcare, disease prevention programmes, digital health initiatives, and capacity building in hospitals and medical institutions.

The data also points to sustained public investment in healthcare following the pandemic years, with emphasis on improving healthcare delivery and preparedness across states.

Experts believe higher public health spending is essential for strengthening healthcare accessibility, reducing out-of-pocket expenses for citizens, and improving long-term health outcomes in the country.
