Ahmedabad, June 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called upon athletes participating in the World Yogasana Championship to become global ambassadors of the Ayush Ministry’s ‘Yoga 365’ campaign, encouraging them to promote yoga as a year-round practice for health and well-being.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the championship in Ahmedabad, the Prime Minister said yoga is not only a form of physical exercise but also a holistic approach to preventive healthcare and balanced living. He urged participants from across the world to take the message of yoga back to their home countries and help expand its reach beyond the sporting arena.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the ‘Yoga 365’ initiative is designed to promote continuous engagement with yoga throughout the year, encouraging individuals and communities to adopt healthier and more mindful lifestyles.
The inaugural World Yogasana Championship, being held from June 4 to 8, has brought together more than 400 athletes from over 60 countries. The event marks a significant step in positioning Yogasana as a structured international sport while also promoting India’s traditional wellness practices on a global stage.
Mr Modi noted that the championship represents more than just a sporting competition, describing it as a platform to spread the broader philosophy of yoga, which emphasizes physical fitness, mental well-being, and inner balance.
Officials said the initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to expand awareness and participation in yoga through the Ministry of Ayush, both in India and internationally. The championship has received support from various sports and wellness bodies involved in promoting Yogasana as a competitive discipline.
The Prime Minister reiterated that yoga’s universal appeal makes it a powerful tool for fostering healthier societies and strengthening global cooperation in preventive healthcare.
