Mumbai, Aug 13: Indian equity markets extended their decline for a third consecutive session on Thursday, with benchmark indices closing modestly lower as investors remained cautious amid mixed market signals.
The Sensex fell 198 points, or 0.25 per cent, to close at 77,860, while the Nifty 50 declined 43 points, or 0.18 per cent, to settle at 23,560. The broader market at the BSE showed a mixed trend, indicating selective buying even as the benchmark indices remained under pressure.
The subdued session reflected a cautious approach among investors, who continued to assess domestic corporate developments alongside global economic and market cues. The limited decline in the headline indices suggested that selling pressure remained measured, although the three-session losing streak points to a degree of uncertainty in the near-term market outlook.
In the currency market, the rupee strengthened by 15 paise to ₹87.42 against the US dollar. The movement in the domestic currency remained closely watched as investors assessed global financial conditions and their potential impact on capital flows.
Precious metals continued to attract attention. 24-karat gold was quoted at ₹84,740 per 10 grams, while 999-fine silver stood at ₹96,040 per kilogram.
In the energy market, Brent crude was trading at $74.78 a barrel, while WTI crude was around $71.08 a barrel. Oil prices remain an important factor for India, given their influence on inflation, corporate costs, the rupee and the country’s import bill.
For investors, the focus now shifts to upcoming corporate developments, global market movements, currency trends and commodity prices. The domestic market is likely to remain sensitive to fresh economic and earnings signals as participants look for clearer direction.
Thursday’s session ultimately reflected a cautious market mood, with the benchmark indices extending their losing run while the broader market remained mixed.
