DPU Super Specialty Hospital Surgeons Give Pune Man Second Chance at Life by Reattaching Both Severed Hands
Pune, 22 July 2025: In a remarkable demonstration of medical expertise and commitment to saving lives, DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune, successfully completed a marathon limb reattachment surgery. A skilled team of nine doctors from the Plastic Surgery department undertook the complex procedure, offering a new lease on life to a critically injured patient.
A 32-year-old male was rushed to DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri-Pune, in a life-threatening condition following a brutal assault involving sharp weapons. The injuries were catastrophic; his left hand was completely severed and the right hand was nearly amputated. He had suffered severe blood loss, was in critical condition with low blood pressure, making the conduct of surgery extremely challenging. Upon initial assessment, the hospital’s emergency team immediately recognized the critical nature of the case and acted with remarkable urgency, stabilizing the patient and alerting the Plastic Surgery department for immediate intervention.
A swift and comprehensive clinical evaluation was conducted, along with urgent diagnostic investigations. Given the severity of the trauma and the limited timeframe for successful replantation, the surgical team decided to take the patient to the operating room without delay. A two-team approach was adopted to operate on both hands simultaneously, given the patient’s fragile condition and urgency of the situation.
What followed was a high-stakes, marathon surgery, beginning at 6:30 PM and continuing uninterrupted through the night, eventually concluding at 5:30 AM the next morning. A dedicated team of skilled plastic surgeons, including senior faculty and residents, took charge of the intricate procedure. The intricate surgery was led by a team of expert plastic surgeons, including Dr. Guruswamy Vishwanath, Dr. Bhushan Patil, Dr. Jyotica Chawaria and Dr. Puja Dandekar, along with senior faculty and residents from the department.
Utilizing advanced microsurgical techniques, the surgical team operated under high-powered microscopes to meticulously reconnect delicate blood vessels, nerves, tendons and bones in both hands. The procedure required exceptional precision, seamless coordination and deep expertise in reconstructive microsurgery. Thanks to the team’s skill and dedication, blood supply was successfully restored and both limbs were successfully reattached not only saving the patient’s hands but also preserving his livelihood, independence and overall quality of life.
Hon’ble Dr. Bhagyashree P. Patil, Pro-Chancellor, Dr. D.Y. Dr. Guruswamy Vishwanath, HOD of Plastic Surgery at DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune, said, “It was critical to reattach the amputated part and restore blood supply as quickly as possible to ensure the survival of the hand. The surgery was successful and the patient is currently recovering. While this is a severe injury with a long road to recovery, we are confident of achieving a good functional outcome despite the deep damage. At his age, failure of the surgery would have meant not just the loss of his limbs, but also his ability to earn a livelihood and support his family. This surgery has given him a real chance at regaining independence and dignity.”
