Government Strengthens Clean Mobility Drive with Nationwide E85 Fuel Network

New Delhi, June 4: The Government of India plans to establish up to 5,000 E85 fuel stations across the country by 2027 as part of its efforts to promote cleaner transportation and reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced.

The proposed expansion aims to accelerate the adoption of ethanol-based fuels and support India’s broader energy transition goals. E85 fuel, which contains up to 85 percent ethanol, is considered a cleaner alternative that can help reduce carbon emissions and strengthen energy security.

The Minister said the initiative aligns with the government’s vision of increasing the use of biofuels, supporting domestic ethanol production, and creating a more sustainable mobility ecosystem.

The rollout of E85 fuel stations is expected to improve accessibility to alternative fuels, encourage the adoption of flex-fuel vehicles, and contribute to India’s long-term environmental and climate objectives.

Officials noted that the expansion will also support farmers and the biofuel industry by creating greater demand for ethanol production while advancing the country’s efforts toward cleaner and more diversified energy sources.

The initiative marks another significant step in India’s transition towards greener transportation and sustainable energy solutions.
