India, Russia seek faster progress on investment treaty to deepen economic ties

New Delhi, Sep 11: India and Russia are looking to strengthen their investment relationship as both sides work towards advancing negotiations on a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT).

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and discussed the need to move forward with negotiations on the proposed investment treaty. The talks underline the importance both countries are placing on creating a stronger and more predictable environment for investors.

A Bilateral Investment Treaty can provide greater clarity to businesses by establishing rules for investment protection and helping address investment-related concerns. A stable framework can be particularly important for companies considering long-term projects that require substantial capital.

For India and Russia, faster progress on the treaty could support greater participation by businesses and investors from both countries. It could encourage companies to look beyond existing areas of cooperation and explore new opportunities in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, technology, logistics and other emerging industries.

The move could also help strengthen investor confidence at a time when businesses are increasingly looking for reliable markets and clearer investment rules. Greater certainty can make it easier for companies to assess risks, plan investments and build long-term partnerships.

For Indian companies, stronger investment engagement with Russia could create opportunities to expand their presence in the Russian market and explore new commercial partnerships. Similarly, Russian businesses could gain greater opportunities to participate in India’s growing economy and expanding infrastructure and manufacturing sectors.

The discussions also reflect the broader effort to deepen economic cooperation between the two countries. While energy and trade remain important parts of the relationship, investment can play a larger role in creating long-term business connections and supporting private-sector growth.

Advancing the BIT negotiations could therefore become an important step towards giving India-Russia economic relations a stronger institutional foundation. A clearer investment framework can help businesses make decisions with greater confidence and encourage more long-term capital flows between the two countries.

The latest meeting highlights the continued focus on strengthening economic ties through greater investment cooperation. If negotiations move forward, the proposed treaty could provide businesses on both sides with greater confidence to explore new projects, partnerships and investment opportunities.
