Chennai, September 16, 2026: In a significant milestone, 45 MBBS students and 13 postgraduate students from SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre have been selected for various Union Government programmes and grants.
As many as 45 students pursuing their first and second years of undergraduate medical education have been selected for various research projects under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Short-Term Studentship (STS) Programme.
The selected students’ work spans clinical, laboratory, diagnostic and community-oriented research. Their projects cover areas such as perioperative care, metabolic disorders, public health, pharmacology and emerging biomedical concerns. The students represent 18 departments and are pursuing their research projects under the mentorship of faculty members.
It is noted that around 1,770 students from various parts of the country applied for the programme. More than 250 students applied from the institute, of whom 45 were selected, resulting in a selection rate of 18%. The ICMR STS Programme provides undergraduate medical students with early exposure to structured scientific research, helping them develop critical thinking, research aptitude and an evidence-based approach to healthcare.
In addition, 13 postgraduates pursuing MD/MS programmes have been selected for various Union Government grants under the Human Resource Development (HRD) Scheme of the Department of Health Research. The institution recorded a selection rate of 52%, compared with the national average of 20%, with more than 6,500 applications received for the programme from across the country.
The thesis proposals selected for funding are from the departments of Microbiology, Anaesthesia, Community Medicine, Biochemistry, Ophthalmology, General Medicine and Paediatrics. Each selected proposal will receive grant support of Rs 1 lakh.
