Rupee Rebounds 23 Paise as Softer Dollar Lifts Sentiment

New Delhi, Oct 9: The Indian rupee strengthened by 23 paise against the US dollar in early trade on Friday, supported by a slight weakening of the US currency and suspected intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Rupee Rebounds 23 Paise as Softer Dollar Lifts Sentiment

The rupee opened at 96.74 against the dollar in the interbank foreign exchange market before rising to 96.65. The gain followed a decline of 13 paise in the previous session, when the domestic currency closed at 96.88 against the US dollar.

The improvement came as the dollar index eased towards 102 and international crude oil prices moved lower, providing some relief to the Indian currency. Market sentiment also received support from developments surrounding US-Iran tensions.

Currency Movement Remains Important for the Economy

The rupee’s movement against the dollar has significant implications for India’s economy, particularly because the country depends heavily on imports of crude oil and several industrial inputs.

A stronger rupee can help reduce the cost of imported goods, including oil, machinery and certain raw materials, when international prices remain unchanged. It may also ease pressure on businesses that have to make payments in dollars.

However, the benefits depend on the duration of the currency’s recovery and movements in global commodity prices. A stronger rupee can also reduce the value of export earnings when foreign revenues are converted into domestic currency.

RBI Support and Global Cues in Focus

Suspected intervention by the RBI provided additional support to the domestic currency, according to market reports. Central bank intervention can help manage excessive volatility in the foreign exchange market and support orderly currency movements.

Nevertheless, persistent geopolitical uncertainty, elevated crude oil prices and foreign investor outflows continue to pose challenges for the rupee.

Foreign institutional investors sold Indian equities worth approximately ₹12,944 crore on Thursday, adding to concerns over capital flows. Sustained foreign investment outflows can increase demand for dollars as investors convert rupee proceeds into foreign currency.

Outlook for the Rupee

Going forward, traders are likely to monitor movements in the dollar index, crude oil prices, foreign investment flows and geopolitical developments for further direction.

Friday’s early recovery offered some relief after the previous session’s decline, but it does not yet establish a sustained upward trend. The rupee’s performance will depend on whether supportive global conditions continue and whether pressure from oil imports and capital outflows eases.

The currency’s stability remains important for businesses, investors and policymakers, as sharp fluctuations can affect import costs, export competitiveness, inflation and overall market sentiment.
