Ahmedabad, May 14: The free Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination drive for adolescent girls in Ahmedabad has reached about 65 per cent of its target, according to health officials.
The programme aims to protect young girls from cervical cancer by providing the HPV vaccine free of cost through government health centres and outreach efforts.
Officials said the campaign has seen steady participation so far, though work is ongoing to improve awareness and increase coverage among eligible beneficiaries. The initiative is part of a wider public health effort targeting adolescent girls across the state.
Health experts emphasise that the HPV vaccine is an important preventive tool against cervical cancer, which remains one of the most common cancers affecting women in India. Vaccination at an early age offers long-term protection by reducing the risk of infection linked to the virus.
The drive also highlights the importance of awareness and education, as many families still lack clear information about preventive vaccination. Authorities said community outreach and school-based engagement are helping improve acceptance and participation.
The campaign is being implemented through government health workers and local medical teams, with the goal of strengthening preventive healthcare and improving long-term health outcomes for adolescent girls.
