Bhubaneswar, Sept. 24 (UDN): Proceedings in the Odisha Legislative Assembly were disrupted on Wednesday as Opposition members from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress staged protests over the MMDR Amendment Act, forcing the House to be adjourned till 4 pm.
The disruption began shortly after the day’s proceedings commenced during Question Hour, when Opposition legislators raised slogans and objected to the Act, preventing the House from conducting its scheduled business.
Congress MLAs staged a symbolic protest by wearing placards around their necks demanding the withdrawal of the MMDR Amendment Act. Earlier, they also demonstrated near the Mahatma Gandhi statue within the Assembly premises, raising slogans against the legislation.
BJD legislators joined the protest inside the House, entering the well of the Assembly and demanding that the state government roll back the Act.
As the uproar continued and Opposition members surrounded the Speaker’s podium, normal proceedings could not continue.
With repeated appeals for order failing to restore normalcy, Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi adjourned the House till 4 pm.
The MMDR Amendment Act has emerged as a major issue during the ongoing Assembly session, with Opposition parties continuing to press their demand for its withdrawal through protests both inside and outside the House.
