Giving away the bride or bride leaving her father’s house is an old marriage custom in India. The centuries-old ritual – Kanyadaan is still prevalent which in a way represents that the husband’s home is the bride’s new home. However, as the mindset of urban Indians is shifting, the opinions of urban millennials and the upcoming generation are also changing.
Considering the fate of Indian brides, Betterhalf.ai – India’s first AI-driven app based on only a “true-compatibility” partner search in its weekly poll conducted an online survey to know the take of the young population on the current Indian customs our society is following. The estimates of the survey reveal the customs that should persist in an Indian household.
According to the findings of the survey – 20 percent believe the bride living in the groom’s house still makes sense in the current scenario. This clearly shows that even in the era of modernity, leaving the parent’s house is the default mechanism for women. This age-old tradition is ingrained in the society that the young population even today finds relevant in today’s world of women empowerment, freedom and equality.
The findings of the online survey also revealed that 28 percent believe the lifestyle change after a wedding still makes sense in the current scenario. In addition, 2 percent believe asset exchange is still relevant in the present times while 50 percent who have shifted their mindset with times believe none of the age-old traditions followed in Indian marriages makes sense.
Commenting on the survey findings, Pawan Gupta CEO of Betterhalf.ai said, “Indian weddings are soulful yet filled with ancient traditions and customs. Keeping up with the times, a few traditions need to be drawn out in order to keep women’s dignity. One such custom is brides leaving their house to stay in their husband’s home for life that represents the bride’s sacrifice to leave their parents and place.”
Though Indian wedding cultures are popular across the world, they are ancient and irrelevant in the present time. The survey represents the viewpoint of the young population which is swiftly shifting towards abolishing old traditions. This is making the meaning of marriages more logical, far from dreamy fairytales
