New Delhi….JagoCongress, a unique need of the hour campaign kick-started across the country today to re-energize India’s prime opposition party i.e. Congress.
The petitioners chose January 25th to roll out the campaign, as it is observed as National Voters Day to symbolize the importance of democratic values and processes. It is also the foundation day of The Election Commission of India, an autonomous constitutional authority responsible for administering Union and State election processes in India.
To begin with, the announcement is made via press note to media across the nation and activation of social media platforms —Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube Channel, and website.
To symbolize the roll out 100 plus people signed petitions across the country.
Besides these, the team will continue its mission and engage with people constructively with more action-oriented activities in the coming days and months.
The main objective behind the campaign is to mobilize one million signatures to petition the Congress party and its President to gear up to offer strong opposition to the government in power.
The petition is put up on change.org. Petition is also available in few key Indian Languages—Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Marathi, Punjabi and Urdu.
Our demands are simple, says the press release
1. Have free and fair elections for key posts especially that of the Congress Working Committee and President.
2. A term limit of two on a president will also allow fresh talent to come up in the party.
3. No two immediate family members should hold key posts at the same time.
We want minimum action to be taken by Congress Party by 75th Independence Day, failing which we the people of India will explore other options says the release.
Ruling and Opposition parties are two sides of the same coin. One cannot be effective without the other.
Toothless opposition is very dangerous for democracy.
It is an initiative of about 100 ordinary citizens from all walks of life, regions of the country. None of these common citizens have any political affiliations, connections, and aspirations.
“India needs a strong opposition to be a successful democracy. And only a successful democracy can guarantee individual rights and freedoms”, says the petition
In the Lok Sabha, the Congress party is the largest opposition party. But it has only 52 seats. The BJP has 303 seats. The BJP has nearly six times the number of seats of the Congress. This is not a good sign for India’s democratic future.
It’s time for the Congress Party to strengthen itself, instill greater confidence in its supporters, and protect the Social Fabric of our beloved country India
It is said, “my country right or wrong. If it is right keep it right, if not set it right”. We are taught this by many scholars, ancestors, freedom fighters, and our teachers. It is nothing more nothing less, say the people behind the campaign.
