ASPET and BPS Announce Sale of Pharmacology Research and Perspectives (PR&P) Journal

Rockville, MD, June 13:  The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) and the British Pharmacological Society (BPS) today announced that ASPET has sold its ownership stake in the journal Pharmacology Research and Perspectives (PR&P) to its co-owner, BPS, and BPS’s publishing partner, Wiley.

PR&P began publication in 2013 as a Gold Open Access journal as a joint effort by ASPET, BPS, and Wiley to provide authors with an innovative venue for publishing their work. In the ensuing years, the journal saw steady growth in the number of papers submitted and published, impact factor (2022 IF: 2.97), and downloaded content. Since its inception, the PR&P editors have worked diligently to provide readers and authors access to rigorous research advances covering both basic and clinical pharmacology in the context of further enabling research reliability and reproducibility, fostering the early clinical development of new chemical entities, and challenging existing pharmacological dogma.  The success of PR&P demonstrated that Gold Open Access publication can provide an impactful venue for the field of pharmacology.

“From its origins with its first editor-in-chief Mike Curtis, through subsequent years of growth and flourishing, PR&P has made a great impact on the field of pharmacology research. On behalf of the editorial board, I am honored to move the journal forward through this transition,” said Jennifer Martin, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of Pharmacology Research & Perspectives. “For authors and readers, very little will change — we will maintain the same editorial standards, submission processes, and readership experience that you’ve come to expect from PR&P.”

“This agreement is a natural next step in the evolution of ASPET’s and BPS’s respective publications portfolios,” said Dave Jackson, MBA, Executive Officer of ASPET. “Our societies have a long and effective collaborative history in advancing the science of pharmacology and supporting the professional development of pharmacologists worldwide. We congratulate BPS on this endeavor, and we look forward to many more years of fruitful partnership.”

“This strategic transition marks an exciting opportunity to bring all three BPS journals together under one umbrella, strengthening the complementarity, visibility and collective impact of our publishing portfolio across the full spectrum of pharmacology — from basic and discovery science through to clinical and translational research,” said Neha Issar-Brown, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of the BPS. “We extend our heartfelt thanks to ASPET for their invaluable contribution and partnership over the years, which has been instrumental in shaping PR&P’s success. We look forward to continuing our wider collaboration in support of pharmacological science, while taking PR&P to new audiences and further expanding its reach and impact.”

The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) is a 4,000-member scientific society whose members conduct basic and clinical pharmacological research and work for academia, government, pharmaceutical companies, biotech companies and non-profit organizations. ASPET members work in a variety of different fields and include neuroscientists, toxicologists, chemical biologists, pharmacists, cardiovascular scientists and many more. Though very diverse, our members have a common bond through their membership in ASPET. Our members’ research efforts help develop new medicines and therapeutic agents to fight existing and emerging diseases.

The British Pharmacological Society is a charity and membership organisation dedicated to advancing the science of pharmacology and therapeutics. We exist to support and advance the discovery, development, and optimised use of medicines for the benefit of society.  Our global membership includes more than 5,000 members across 60+ countries, working in academia, industry, regulation, clinical settings, and healthcare more broadly.
