Telangana’s First Government Building Achieves IGBC Net Zero Energy by Design

Future City, Telangana, June 11: In a significant milestone for sustainable public infrastructure, the Future City Development Authority (FCDA) Office Building has become the first government building in Telangana to achieve the IGBC Net Zero Energy Certification by design from CII’s Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

The certification was formally presented by Mr. C. Shekar Reddy, National Chairman, IGBC, to Mr. K. Shashanka, IAS, Commissioner, Future City Development Authority (FCDA), Telangana, in the presence of Shri A. Revanth Reddy, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Telangana, at the inaugural ceremony held at Future City on June 10, 2026.

Speaking at a public function at Future City, Shri Revanth Reddy,  Chief Minister, Govt. of Telangana, said,

Telangana is committed to building the cities that are sustainable, resilient, and environmentally responsible. The FCDA building achieving the IGBC Net Zero Energy Design Certification, the first government building in Telangana to do so, is a significant milestone in this journey. It demonstrates how public infrastructure can lead by example in adopting green building practices and reducing environmental impact. As we shape Future City and other urban development initiatives, sustainability will remain at the core of our vision. I encourage government institutions, private developers, industries, and citizens to embrace green and net zero building principles. Together, we can create a cleaner, healthier, and more energy-efficient Telangana for generations to come.”

The achievement underscores Telangana’s commitment to building future-ready, environmentally responsible public infrastructure and aligns with the state’s vision of creating sustainable urban ecosystems.

The FCDA Office Building has been designed to operate as a Net Zero Energy facility, with 100 percent of its annual energy consumption offset through clean energy sources, comprising a combination of onsite renewable energy generation and offsite green power procurement. A key feature of the project is the installation of a 40 kWp rooftop solar photovoltaic system, which is expected to generate approximately 60,000 kWh of renewable energy annually. The balance of the building’s energy requirements will be met through green energy procurement under the state’s Green Tariff policy.

The building incorporates several energy-efficient design measures aimed at minimizing operational energy consumption. These include a high-performance HVAC system, energy-efficient lighting fixtures, and a design that maximizes natural daylight penetration through a high window-to-wall ratio. These features significantly reduce dependence on artificial lighting and contribute to overall energy efficiency.

Receiving the certification, Shri K. Shashanka, IAS, Commissioner, Future City Development Authority (FCDA), said,

“This recognition reflects our commitment to creating Future City as a model for sustainable urban development. The FCDA Office Building shows how innovative design, renewable energy integration and resource-efficient planning can come together to create infrastructure that is environmentally responsible and future-ready.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. C. Shekar Reddy, National Chairman, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), said,

“The FCDA Office Building sets a new benchmark for sustainable government infrastructure in Telangana. By embracing Net Zero Energy principles at the design stage, the project demonstrates how public buildings can lead the transition towards a low-carbon and energy-efficient future. We congratulate the Government of Telangana and FCDA for this pioneering achievement.”

The project reinforces Future City’s vision of developing a world-class urban ecosystem that prioritizes sustainability, innovation and resilience, while setting new standards for green building practices across the country.
