May, 28: Marking the grand culmination of one of India’s most ambitious multilingual filmmaking talent discovery initiatives, ‘Z’ is all set to host the Zee Short Film Contest 2026 Grand Finale on 5th June at Grand Hyatt, Mumbai. Bringing together emerging filmmakers, acclaimed storytellers, industry leaders and creative stakeholders under one roof, the event promises to celebrate India’s next generation of cinematic voices and the growing strength of regional storytelling across the country.
Launched earlier this year as a first-of-its-kind pan-India platform for aspiring filmmakers, the Zee Short Film Contest 2026 received an overwhelming response from creators across the country, with entries running into thousands across multiple language markets. At the heart of the initiative lies ‘Z’s commitment to discovering and empowering the next generation of storytellers by investing in their dreams, nurturing their craft, and powering their stories through the combined strength of its television and digital ecosystem. Over the past few months, the initiative has evolved into a nationwide storytelling movement celebrating regional creativity, fresh perspectives and creator-led innovation. From discovering compelling narratives across languages to creating meaningful industry opportunities for emerging talent, the contest has showcased the depth and diversity of storytelling talent thriving across India.
Since its inception, the Zee Short Film Contest 2026 has been guided by an illustrious jury panel featuring some of India’s most celebrated filmmakers and storytellers, including Anurag Kashyap (Hindi), Ravi Jadhav (Marathi), Nag Ashwin (Telugu), Srijit Mukherji (Bengali), Samuthirakani (Tamil), Hemanth Rao (Kannada), and Lijo Jose Pellissery (Malayalam). As mentors and jury members, they have played a pivotal role in evaluating submissions, encouraging emerging voices and shaping the creative journey of the contest from its very foundation.
The winners across eight language categories will be officially unveiled during the Grand Finale on 5th June, with each language category recognizing outstanding storytelling talent through a series of curated opportunities and rewards. As part of the initiative, one winner from each language will receive a cash prize of INR 2,00,000 in recognition of their storytelling excellence and cinematic craft. Further, the top 10 films from each language category will be acquired by ‘Z’, streamed on ZEE5 and showcased across the network’s leading channels, ensuring these stories receive nationwide visibility and reach.
Adding to the evening’s marquee experiences, renowned film journalist and critic Rajeev Masand will host a special roundtable conference with the jury members featuring conversations around storytelling, filmmaking and the evolving future of Indian entertainment.
The celebration will further reach audiences across the country through ‘Z’s expansive entertainment ecosystem. Contest highlights and winning films will be showcased across Zee Zest, Zing, Zee TV, Zee Marathi, Zee Bangla, Zee Telugu, Zee Kannada, Zee Tamil and Zee Keralam, amplifying the visibility of emerging storytellers across television and digital platforms.
Commenting on the significance of the initiative, Raghavendra Hunsur, Chief Content Officer, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, said,
“At ‘Z’, we believe the future of Indian entertainment lies in discovering and nurturing authentic voices from across the country. Storytelling, for us, is not just content creation, it is a powerful expression of India’s evolving aspirations, identities and cultural depth. The Zee Short Film Contest was envisioned not merely as a competition, but as a transformative platform that connects emerging creators with meaningful industry opportunities. The overwhelming response to the initiative reflects the extraordinary depth of storytelling talent across India’s regional markets, and we are proud to provide these creators with visibility, mentorship and pathways into mainstream entertainment, enabling them to meaningfully shape the next chapter of Indian storytelling.”
Kartik Mahadev, Chief Marketing Officer, ZEE & ZEE5, added,
“Today, storytelling is no longer confined to a single screen. Audiences move fluidly across television, OTT, digital, and social ecosystems, and creators deserve platforms that can amplify their vision across every touchpoint. With the Zee Short Film Contest and the omnichannel ecosystem at ZEE, emerging filmmakers and directors will get a chance to showcase their work at scale across linear television and streaming platform, giving their stories greater visibility, reach, and impact. Beyond creating opportunities for discovery, the initiative reflects our larger commitment as a network to nurturing creative ambition, championing original voices, and empowering the next generation of storytellers through the unmatched scale and strength of the ‘Z’ ecosystem.”
Alenkar Pathare, Business Head – Youth (Zee Zest, Zing, Teleplay), said,
“As industry leaders, we at ‘Z’ maintain a sharp focus on nurturing the creative talent and building a future-ready ecosystem. For emerging creators, access to meaningful mentorship often becomes the bridge between raw potential and compelling storytelling. In many ways, this initiative enabled direct engagement with some of the country’s most accomplished filmmakers, who brought immense credibility and creative depth to the process. Their participation helped us shape a more rigorous and inspiring environment, one that challenged participants to think beyond formats and understand storytelling through the lens of craft, scale and audience impact. The success of the first edition reflects our commitment to build a more connected ecosystem where learning and opportunity shape the next generation of filmmakers for the industry at large.”
As ‘Z’ continues to champion culturally resonant storytelling and creator-first innovation, the Zee Short Film Contest 2026 Grand Finale marks a defining moment in its journey towards building one of India’s most inclusive and future-forward platforms for emerging filmmakers. With the winners set to be announced on 5th June, the initiative promises to celebrate the storytellers of tomorrow while paving the way for many more creative opportunities in the future.
