Bhubaneswar, May 16 (BNP): More than 100 fishermen from Odisha’s Kanas area were reportedly stranded in the middle of Chilika Lake after their fishing boats ran out of diesel while returning from fishing operations, triggering concern among local fishing communities.

According to sources, the fishermen had ventured deep into the lake early in the day for routine fishing activities. However, due to the ongoing fuel shortage and difficulties in procuring adequate diesel, several boats exhausted their fuel supply before reaching the shore.
The incident left dozens of fishermen stranded in different parts of the lake for hours, forcing them to seek assistance from fellow boat operators and local residents. Some boats were reportedly towed back to shore with the help of other fishermen.
The situation has once again highlighted the growing impact of the ongoing fuel crisis on livelihood-dependent sectors in coastal Odisha, particularly among fishing communities around Chilika Lake.
Fishermen alleged that long queues at fuel stations and limited diesel availability have disrupted their daily operations over the past few days. Many expressed concern that continued fuel scarcity could severely affect fishing activities and their earnings.
Local fishermen associations urged the administration to make special fuel supply arrangements for fishermen and essential services to prevent such incidents in future.
Authorities are monitoring the situation, while efforts are underway to ensure the safe return of all stranded fishermen.
