Chennai, May 14: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is set to introduce a new mobile application along with Passenger Information System (PIS) display boards across the city under the Chennai Intelligent Transport System (CITS) project to improve public transport convenience and safety.
The upcoming app, “MTC Chennai”, will replace the existing “Chennai Bus” application and offer real-time tracking of buses using data from onboard tracking devices. Officials said the upgraded system will provide more accurate and reliable information for commuters.
The app will allow users to track multiple categories of buses, including ordinary, express, deluxe, electric AC, low-floor and small buses, simply by entering route numbers. It will also feature a “nearby bus stops” option to help passengers identify the right boarding points and reduce confusion during travel.
A key addition is an integrated SOS emergency feature, designed especially to enhance women’s safety. The tool will enable users to quickly alert the MTC control centre in case of emergencies.
The system, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, is expected to be launched within the next 10 days after formal approval from the new state government leadership, according to MTC Managing Director T. Prabhushankar.
In parallel, around 500 digital PIS boards have been installed at major bus stops and terminals across Chennai, including key hubs such as Kilambakkam, Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, Anna Square, Perambur and Vadapalani. These displays will show real-time arrival and departure information, helping commuters plan their travel more efficiently.
Officials said the system is currently in its final testing phase and may later be expanded to include features such as digital ticketing and integration with the CHENNAI ONE platform
