OpenAI Brings Codex to ChatGPT Mobile App

New Delhi, May 15: OpenAI has introduced its AI coding assistant Codex inside the ChatGPT mobile app for iOS and Android, expanding access to developers who want to manage coding tasks remotely from their smartphones.

The new integration allows users to monitor ongoing coding work, review outputs, approve commands, and initiate new tasks directly from the mobile app while Codex continues running on connected systems such as laptops, Mac minis, or remote development environments.

According to OpenAI, the feature is being rolled out in preview across all ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go, in supported regions.

Remote Coding and Real-Time Updates

With the mobile integration, users can stay connected to their development workflows without being physically present at their desktop. The system supports real-time updates such as:

  • Code outputs and diffs
  • Terminal logs and test results
  • Screenshots from active sessions
  • Approval requests for commands

While updates are streamed to mobile devices, files, credentials, and system permissions remain securely stored on the connected machine.

Designed for On-the-Go Developer Control

OpenAI said the update is aimed at improving flexibility for developers working on long-running coding tasks. Users can switch models, guide ongoing work, or start new projects directly from the ChatGPT mobile interface.

The feature is particularly useful for monitoring complex projects where Codex handles tasks such as debugging, feature development, and code review over extended periods.

Wider Availability and Expansion

The Codex mobile integration is currently available in preview for iOS and Android users across all supported ChatGPT plans.

OpenAI also indicated that support for additional environments, including expanded Windows connectivity, is expected in future updates.

Growing Focus on AI Coding Tools

The rollout reflects OpenAI’s continued push into AI-assisted software development, as competition intensifies in the AI coding space. The company has been enhancing Codex capabilities to support more autonomous and collaborative development workflows.

With mobile access now enabled, developers gain greater control and visibility over AI-driven coding tasks, even when away from their primary workstations.
