Dholera, June 4: A pilot environmental initiative in Dholera has demonstrated encouraging results in transforming saline and degraded land into green cover using an innovative “drum plantation” technique.
The method involves planting saplings in specially designed drum-like containers that help protect young plants from harsh saline soil conditions during their early growth stage. This approach improves root development and increases survival rates in areas where conventional plantation methods often struggle.
Officials associated with the project said the technique has shown promising success in supporting vegetation growth on salt-affected land, offering a practical solution for ecological restoration in coastal and semi-arid regions.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to reclaim degraded land and promote sustainable afforestation in environmentally sensitive areas of Gujarat, particularly in and around Dholera.
Environmental experts noted that if scaled further, the technique could provide a cost-effective and replicable model for greening saline landscapes across India.
The pilot outcome highlights the potential of simple, innovative interventions in addressing land degradation and strengthening long-term environmental sustainability.
