Kolkata, Sept 09: From now onwards there would be a paradigm shift in ease of adjudication by way of greater co-ordination as the Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunal and Debt Recovery Tribunals under its jurisdiction are brought under a single roof.

The Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunal hosted its inaugural ceremony of new place of sitting on 8th September 2026 at the Jeevan Sudha Building, Kolkata. From now onwards, the Appellate Tribunal Kolkata would be housed in the 10th floor of the said high riser shifting from its earlier address of 9, Old Post Office Street, Kolkata.
Growing concerns for faster recovery of debts and high amount of bank’s stakes led to enactment of RDB Act 1993 (Recovery of Debts due to Bank & Financial Institution Act 1993) later named as Recovery of Debts & Bankruptcy Act 1993, which provided for setting up of special Tribunals for litigation over banks debts. Toing the line drawn in the statute, Debt Recovery Tribunals were set up across the country with Appellate Tribunal at their helm. Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunal Kolkata came into being way back 1993 (24th June 1993) and travelled a long way in its journey over nearly three decades. The Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal Kolkata hears appeals from orders passed by the Debts Recovery Tribunals placed under its legal and administrative jurisdictions, across state of West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Orrisa, Guwahati including all North East States. Amidst rigours of constraints and challenges the Appellate Tribunal Kolkata has been playing increasingly significant role in adjudication of debt-disputes.
Chaired by Justice Anil Kumar Srivastava, former judge of Hon’ble High Court at Allahabad, the Appellate Tribunal Kolkata kept on meeting and answering incisive legal questions impacting recovery of debts. Ensuring protection of bank’s interest and saving rights of borrower from being bludgeoned has always made the function of Appellate Tribunal complex and challenging. Today the Appellate Tribunal Kolkata superintends not only over the function of Debt Recovery Tribunal-I, II & III but it extends over of Debt Recovery Tribunal Cuttack, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Siliguri.
The new location of Appellate Tribunal and bringing all the Tribunals under one roof would go a long way in ease of functioning for lawyers, advocates dealing with bank and debt related litigation as their forte delivering their best to assist Tribunals and Appellate Tribunal in adjudication.
