Kathmandu, Sep 4: Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang has extended major support to Nepal’s flood relief efforts by contributing $10 million to the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund for people affected by severe flooding in Rasuwa district.
The donation will add to the resources available for emergency assistance and recovery in communities affected by flooding in the Bhotekoshi River basin, where the disaster has caused significant disruption.
Nepal Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle announced the contribution, saying the donation has helped take total collections in the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund beyond NPR 10 billion, or about $66 million.
Huang’s contribution comes as Nepal continues to receive financial and humanitarian assistance from individuals, organisations, foreign governments and international agencies responding to the disaster.
The funds are expected to support relief operations as well as rehabilitation and recovery work for communities that have suffered damage. Immediate priorities include assistance to affected families and restoration of essential services and infrastructure.
The scale of the contribution also highlights the growing international response to Nepal’s flood crisis. Support from overseas donors is expected to complement the government’s relief efforts and provide additional resources for longer-term reconstruction.
For communities in Rasuwa and other affected areas, the relief funding will be important as they move from immediate emergency assistance towards rebuilding homes, livelihoods and local infrastructure damaged by the floods.
